Aquatic Snoezelen Room at Ecole Vickers

  • We are very proud to announce.

    • "On Friday, March 2/07, the Prince Albert Optimist Club presented the Vickers School Developmental Education students with a cheque for $5000.00 to build an Aquatic Snoezelen Experience...With the very generous donation from the Prince Albert Optimist Club, we are now able to transform the hot tub room in the Developmental Education class at Vickers School, into a multi-sensory Aquatic Snoezelen Experience for the use of our students.  We look forward to a grand opening ceremony this spring or as soon as the room is ready for student use. "

      Yours sincerely,

Snoezelen Room

  • Located at Ecole Vickers School, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada.
  • This was a joint project with Ronald McDonald House and the Optimist Club of Prince Albert.  We contributed $5,000.00.  The Sask Rivers School Div. 119 would supply the maintenance and staff for the projects future.
  • Linda Mackie (Developmental Education) is the Development Teacher, from Ecole Vickers.  Students from other schools use this room too (Especially from Carlton Comprehensive High School).

    • "What is SNOEZELEN?

      • The SNOEZELEN environment is safe and non-threatening. Children and adults with disabilities or other limiting conditions enjoy gentle stimulation of the primary senses. There is no need for intellectual reasoning. Participants experience self-control, autonomous discovery, and exploration-achievements that overcome inhibitions, enhance self-esteem, and reduce tension. Free from the expectations of others and away from the pressures of directed care, they recuperate and relax.

      • Research has shown that multisensory environments offer a wealth of benefits, often affording the participant and caregiver an opportunity to improve communications, enhance their understanding of each other, and build trust in their relationship. SNOEZELEN is a wonderful experience to enjoy and share-a place that replenishes the spirit."

  • From Wikipedia,
    • "Snoezelen or controlled multisensory stimulation is used for ...
    • Originally developed in the Netherlands in the 1970s, snoezelen rooms have been established in institutions all over the world (like in Germany, where more than 1200 exist).
    • Snoezelen might be beneficial to people with autism and other developmental disabilities, dementia, and brain injury. However, research on these matters is scarce, with variable study designs.
    • The term "snoezelen" (pronounced like "SNOOzelen") is a neologism formed from the Dutch "snuffelen" (to sniff, to snuffle) and "doezelen" (to doze, to snooze)."
